Questions
- What is the Hijri date today?
- The date at the top of this page is today's date on the Umm al-Qura calendar, the calendar Saudi Arabia uses officially, worked out for the current day in Gulf time.
- When does the Hijri date change?
- On the Umm al-Qura civil calendar the date changes at midnight, like the Gregorian one. In the religious reckoning a day begins at sunset, so the evening before a date is already counted as part of it.
- Is the Hijri date the same in the UAE and Saudi Arabia?
- Yes, except for one hour each night: the UAE and Oman are an hour ahead of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain, so from midnight to 1am UAE time the UAE is already on the next day.
- Why can Ramadan or Eid start on a different day?
- Umm al-Qura is calculated in advance. The start of Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha is fixed by the official moon-sighting announcement in each country, which can be a day earlier or later than the calculated date.
