Kuwait's National Day, 25 February, is the anniversary of Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah taking up rule in 1950; a 1963 decree joined the National Day to that date. Independence came on 19 June 1961, and Liberation Day, 26 February, marks the reinstatement of the legitimate government in 1991.
