The rule, and where it comes from

  • The nisab for cash is the value of 85 grams of pure gold. When cash held reaches the nisab and a lunar year (hawl) has passed, zakat is 2.5% of it, one quarter of one tenth (Awqaf).
  • The basis used here: 85 grams × the 24-karat rate per gram that ThronePulse published most recently, in UAE dirhams. 24-karat is the pure gold the rule names. The rate is the Dubai Jewellery Group's published rate for 24K, or, when that could not be read, the international spot price converted to dirhams and marked as spot. Its source and time are printed beside the nisab.
  • The hawl starts when your cash first reaches the nisab. If it falls below the nisab during the year, the count starts again when it returns to it (Awqaf).
  • The calculator counts cash and savings only. Gold, silver, trade goods, shares, livestock and crops have their own rules; Awqaf's staff calculate them on request.

How much zakat is due on savings?
2.5% of the amount, once it has reached the nisab and a full lunar year has passed.
Which gold price does the calculator use?
The 24-karat rate per gram that ThronePulse published most recently: the Dubai Jewellery Group's rate, or the international spot price when that rate could not be read. The source and time are shown with the nisab.

Awqaf's rule is that the lunar year starts again when the money returns to the nisab.
